On January 13, it was reported by the Titanium Dioxide Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the Titanium Dioxide Alliance) that China’s total titanium dioxide production in 2024 is expected to reach a new historical high of 4.766 million tons, an increase of 606,000 tons from the previous year, representing a growth rate of 14.57%.
According to Bi Sheng, the Secretary-General of the Titanium Dioxide Alliance Secretariat, in 2024, there will be a total of 42 titanium dioxide production enterprises in the industry with normal production conditions (excluding post-processing/finishing enterprises). The total production of rutile type (including sulfate process full-flow crude products, finished products, and chloride process products) and anatase type titanium dioxide and related products is expected to reach 4.766 million tons.
According to statistics, the production of rutile titanium dioxide is 4.051 million tons, accounting for 85.00%, a decrease of 1.54 percentage points from the previous year. The production of anatase titanium dioxide is 560,000 tons, accounting for 11.75%, an increase of 1.64 percentage points from the previous year. The production of non-pigment grade and other types of titanium dioxide is 156,000 tons, accounting for 3.27%, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous year.
Bi Sheng pointed out that in 2024, the production of chloride process titanium dioxide is 663,000 tons, a decrease of 29,000 tons from the previous year, representing a decline of 4.19%. This marks the first decline in recent years. The production of chloride process products accounts for 13.91% of the total titanium dioxide production, a year-on-year decrease of 2.72 percentage points; it accounts for 16.37% of the rutile product production, a year-on-year decrease of 2.85 percentage points.
In 2024, among the 40 comparable production enterprises, 10 reported a year-on-year decline in output, while most of the remaining manufacturers increased their production, with a few remaining unchanged. Two companies have ceased production or closed, but two new enterprises have begun production. Bi Sheng emphasized that in 2024, the average capacity utilization rate for the entire titanium dioxide industry is 80.64%, which is relatively low.
